Script for Intergenerational Dialogue – Dr. Jane Fraser, older writer

Jane Fraser recently completed her Ph.D. in her 80s. With funding from Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program,   she facilitated a project Generativity: Drama in Senior Residences with seniors and secondary school students to foster improved dialogue between youth and older adults.

The goal and outcome of the project was to create a script to guide role playing conversations.  Seniors were recruited for a group session to offer a wide range of  impressions and thoughts about youth.  Then, the youth at Brampton’s Mayfield Secondary School wrote a play, which incorporated the seniors’ words with words from their youthful point of view.

The script for the play provides dialogue between seniors and youth for discussion, acting or reading by recipients. After the formal presentation, dialogue would continue between the two age groups.

Lifelong learning and learning something new are essential to maintain cognition in later life. Benefits to exercising memory and challenging minds through drama have been demonstrated.  But encouraging seniors’ active participation in drama can be a slow process. This drama provides a resource to draw seniors and youth together in role playing and the kind of respectful intergroup conversation that seems all too rare these days.

HERE is the script – Why not try it out in an intergenerational gathering?
